Houston’s historic Fifth Ward neighborhood will be the hot spot for the upcoming Legacy Community Health Fest, an event that will focus on the importance of health care in this traditionally underserved community. The free community-wide event features Keisha Nicole and the 97.9 The Box Team, and a special performance by the Atherton Elementary Drumline. Events like the Health Fest help Legacy spread the word about the role health care access plays over the span of a person’s life.
“At Legacy our mission is to drive healthy change in our communities. Our programs help to break down the barriers and stigma that people sometimes face in getting access to quality medical care,” said Felicia Latson, Director of Social Determinants of Health program at Legacy.
Health Fest attendees will get to take part in free health screenings, including dental and vision checks, and tour Legacy’s beautiful, state-of-the art clinic. There will be fitness classes for kids and seniors, and attendees will have ample time to meet medical providers from across Legacy’s many services. Legacy’s eligibility specialists will be on site to answer questions about becoming a Legacy patient.
Health Fest will also feature fun activities for the whole family, including bounce houses and face painting for kids. Free children’s books will be given out through the Legacy Little Readers Program and a raffle will be held for summer gift packs with Houston Zoo, Schlitterbahn and Houston Dynamo tickets. Legacy community partner Target Hunger will be also be on hand at the Fifth Ward Health Fest to distribute fresh produce. Refreshments, including Kona Ice sno-cones and popcorn, will be provided.
“From pregnancy, to newborn visits, pediatrics to geriatrics, Legacy’s Fifth Ward clinic is there to provide affordable, quality care to the families in the community,” said Latson.
Legacy Community Health Fest will take place on Saturday, Jun 15, 2019, at Legacy’s clinic at 3811 Lyons Avenue from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. For more information about Legacy’s Fifth Ward clinic, click here.
