National Youth HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NYHAAD) is dedicated to highlighting the impact of HIV/AIDS on the lives of young individuals, advocating for improved access to care, and promoting preventive measures to end HIV – and HIV stigma.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), youth aged 13 to 24 accounted for about 21% of all new HIV diagnoses in the United States in 2019. These numbers reveal a stark reality: HIV continues to affect the lives of many young individuals, underscoring the importance of awareness, education, and early testing.
Legacy Community Health is proud to stand at the forefront of treatment and prevention, offering comprehensive care and support to the youth in our community. Legacy is committed to breaking down barriers to healthcare access by providing essential services including free walk-in HIV testing. Early diagnosis and treatment of HIV can significantly alter the course of the disease, transform outcomes, and enhance the quality of life for those affected.
The Importance of Education and Prevention
Education plays a pivotal role in prevention. By fostering an environment where young people feel comfortable discussing their health concerns, seeking advice, and accessing testing services, we can significantly reduce the spread of HIV. Legacy Community Health actively participates in educational initiatives, aiming to dispel myths and provide accurate information about HIV/AIDS, including community outreach, online resources, and more. Check in with your Legacy provider for more information on what events or initiatives are coming up soon.
Preventive measures, such as regular testing and PrEP (Pre-exposure prophylaxis), are key elements in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Legacy encourages people to take charge of their health by offering resources and guidance to navigate these preventive strategies effectively.
