A medical career is one of the most important and impactful paths someone can choose. It offers the chance to heal, support, and make a lasting difference in people’s lives. Whether you’re early in your career or are already an experienced doctor seeking new opportunities, choosing the right place to make a contribution is a decision that deserves careful thought.
Legacy Community Health offers medical professionals a unique opportunity for professional growth. Here, you can be part of an institution that firmly believes healthcare is a right for everyone – without exception – and reflects this unwavering belief in everything we do.
Selecting a Medical Residency That Offers Experience Working In a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC)
Choosing a medical residency program is a decision that shapes the trajectory of a physician’s entire career. Each medical specialty offers unique rewards. Many different factors should be considered to make sure the choice aligns with one’s professional aspirations and personal values.
Prospective residents need to think about job market trends, patient care philosophy, and lifestyle balance. Strong mentorship, access to educational resources, and mental health support are also critical for success. Residents interested in patient advocacy and holistic care should prioritize programs that emphasize these values.
Those who match with Houston Methodist Family Medicine Residency have the opportunity to care for patients at the Legacy Community Health-San Jacinto Clinic, a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). While clinic is an exciting part of residency, it is only one part of a new doctor’s residency training. When they are not seeing patients in clinic, residents undergo a variety of outpatient and inpatient rotations at Houston Methodist and other sites. Residents at Legacy Community Health-San Jacinto Clinic have the opportunity to enhance their skills and understanding of community health.
As a FQHC, Legacy Community Health gives Family Medicine residents a comprehensive and in-depth perspective on patient care by taking into account the full context of every patient’s life and addressing the root causes of their health issues. This approach ensures patients receive holistic care tailored to their needs. It also allows every resident to develop deeper and more meaningful relationships with their patients, thus building a foundation of trust.
Growing Demand for Primary Care Professionals
Nationally, there is a growing demand for primary care professionals. Family Medicine, practiced by family physicians, is a specific specialty within primary care.
The Human Resources & Services Administration (HRSA), an agency of the Department of Health and Human Services, recently noted the anticipated shortage of primary care physicians in the coming years and the growing need for healthcare providers in community settings. HRSA projects a shortage of 87,150 full-time equivalent primary care physicians by 2037, creating a significant opportunity for residents and practicing doctors interested in primary care.
Federally Qualified Health Centers like Legacy Community Health play a vital role in meeting this need. By providing comprehensive services in underserved areas, we play a pivotal role in mitigating the effects of this shortage. Our commitment to training and employing primary care physicians directly contributes to addressing the national need for healthcare providers.
With over 50 locations in the Texas Gulf Coast region, we offer a wide array of primary services, among them Adult Primary Care, Behavioral Health, Dental, Endocrinology, HIV/STD Screening, LGBTQ Services, OB/GYN, Pediatrics, Pharmacy, Senior Care, Vaccinations & Immunizations, and Vision.
Joining Legacy Community Health After Residency
Our commitment to offering culturally competent care and addressing social determinants of health makes us an ideal choice for those driven by a mission of service.
We also help experienced physicians thrive. We foster an empathetic and inclusive workplace culture that supports a healthy work-life balance. Understanding the demands of the medical profession, we provide resources and flexibility to ensure that our staff can maintain personal well-being alongside professional responsibilities.
We are committed to our employees’ growth and therefore offer opportunities for professional development and mental health support. This commitment ensures that our physicians can advance in their careers while providing the highest quality care to their patients.
Gynecologist and obstetrician Michelle Jones, MD’s approach represents the patient-centered care model we promote: “My goal is to be that person who hopefully makes [women] feel seen and heard…I want to have open communication where [patients] feel comfortable with me on a daily basis to open up about things that are extremely personal.”
Meanwhile, Stephanie Klassen, MD’s experience highlights the profound impact that working at Legacy Community Health has on both physicians and the communities they serve: “I really feel fulfilled [working here] because I do get to help underserved communities. Every day I have people [tell me] that Legacy was the only place that would accept them. So it’s very satisfying.”
Financial Incentives and Loan Repayment Opportunities for Doctors
In addition to being able to practice values-driven medicine, working at Legacy Community Health can also have financial benefits.
We are an employer sponsor of the Texas Physician Education Loan Repayment Program (PELRP), which offers significant financial incentives for physicians–up to $180,000 in educational loan repayment over several years–who practice medicine and serve patients under a medical assistance program in a Health Professional Shortage Area.
Requirements include practicing medicine in an approved primary care specialty, providing services in a federally designated Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA), and committing to four consecutive years of service.
Those who are accepted into the program are required to be U.S. citizens or hold Legal Permanent Residency (“Green Card”) status. They must have completed at least one year of full-time qualifying service. They also have to be eligible for board certification and certified by the fourth year of enrollment. Finally, with the exception of psychiatrists and geriatricians, they must provide services in an outpatient setting.
Legacy Community Health’s locations and service model align well with these requirements, making it an attractive employer for medical professionals looking to alleviate educational debt while serving communities in need.
Working at Legacy Community Health Positively Impacts Patient Care
