Join Legacy in Celebrating Pride Month!

June is Pride Month! This month is a time to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community, amplify LGBTQ+ voices, and honor the trailblazers who have advanced equity for all. For Legacy, that means giving well-deserved flowers to those LGBTQ+ pioneers in health care. In fact, if you weren’t aware, Legacy ourselves began serving the community over 40 years ago!

We are proud to take a moment to highlight just a few of the achievements of LGBTQ+ health care innovators and give you a look at some upcoming events across our communities that you might want to check out this Pride Month.

LGBTQ+ Pioneers: In the Exam Room and Marching the Streets

Throughout history, many members of the LGBTQ+ community have made significant contributions to the medical field. Oftentimes, these folks made their achievements while overcoming great personal and professional challenges along the way simply for being who they are – which is part of the reason we celebrate Pride in the first place! Dr. Sara Josephine Baker, an openly lesbian physician in the early 20th century, revolutionized public health practices and significantly reduced infant mortality rates. Alan Hart, a transgender man, was one of the first physicians to identify the connection between tuberculosis transmission and crowded living conditions, leading to improved public health policies.

In more recent years, activists like Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera championed health initiatives that address the needs of marginalized populations, ensuring access to adequate health care for all, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation. Their work paved the way for institutions like Legacy to provide comprehensive and inclusive medical services.

Join Us in Celebration and Good Health

Pride Month is not just a time for celebration but also a crucial observance month that reminds us to focus on the health and well-being of the LGBTQ+ community – in June and beyond. Legacy remains as committed to providing top-notch, culturally competent health care in a welcoming environment as we have been since we opened our doors as Montrose Clinic over four decades ago. We are proud to support and participate in Pride Month events across southeast Texas, and we look forward to seeing you there!

Join us at the following Pride festivals for a day full of festivities, health education, and community building. Our staff will be available to discuss health services, provide screenings, and celebrate the vibrant local community!
